On March 6th, 2024 – the 101st birthday of Jazz Guitar legend John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery – Robert Montgomery, the son of Wes, unveiled a historical marker from the Indiana Historical Bureau remembering his father and his uncles Monk and Buddy in the city of Indianapolis close to the site of the Montgomery family home which had been located at 1217 Cornell Avenue but had been razed to build the interstate.

The dedication ceremony featured speakers, a musical dedication performance by Jazz Guitarist Steven Weakley and other local musicians, along with the unveiling of the historical marker.

LA based Jazz Guitarist Jacques Lesure was also on hand for the ceremony and later, was invited to sit in with the locals at the Jazz Kitchen where the party and music continued 🙂

“Today, a marker stands to enlighten and encourage the next generations of artists seeking to put their own stamp on the culture from their own Indianapolis base. ‘I’m hoping as they put this marker down that we will really come to know that as a state we have played a significant role in the arts,’ said Robert. ‘That marker is gonna lead them into, ‘Well, who is this?’ and they’re gonna research’.” – source
